About Deoghar

देवघर — The Abode of Gods. A city where faith, history, and nature meet at the foothills of Jharkhand.

Deoghar, literally meaning "Abode of Gods" (देव = God, घर = Home), is a city in the Deoghar district of Jharkhand, India. It is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in Hinduism, primarily because it houses the Baidyanath Jyotirlinga — the 12th of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The city is also known as Baidyanath Dham or Vaidyanath Dham. According to Hindu mythology, the demon king Ravana pleased Lord Shiva with his devotion and was granted a boon — the Jyotirlinga was brought from Kailash to Lanka. However, due to divine intervention, the Jyotirlinga was placed at this spot in Deoghar and could not be moved, making it a permanently established holy site.
